As Adirondack foliage nears its peak, crowded trailheads and cars lining road shoulders are increasing safety concerns for visitors, according to Spectrum News 1.
Some trailheads sit beside roads posted at 55 mph, and state forest ranger Allison Rooney urged pedestrians to stay beyond the white line and watch for vehicles before crossing.
Rooney said roadside parking is permitted only when cars are beyond the white line and outside posted no-parking areas.
Tourism officials said limited parking means hikers should have a backup destination and drivers should slow down near trailheads, where cars frequently enter and leave the road.
The region drew 670,000 visitors last fall, and the Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism suggested midweek trips as a quieter option.
