Yates County residents can dispose of expired, unused and unwanted prescription medications during a free drug take-back event next month in Penn Yan.
The drive-thru collection will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, behind the Yates County Courthouse at 415 Liberty St. Medications will be accepted anonymously with no questions asked, according to the Yates County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office is holding the event in partnership with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration as part of National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. Deputies will collect the medications for destruction.
Sheriff Frank Ryan said proper disposal can help prevent prescription drugs from being abused, misused or stolen. The initiative also offers residents an alternative to flushing unwanted medications, which can create environmental concerns.
“This is a great opportunity for those who accumulated unwanted, unused prescription drugs to safely dispose of them,” Ryan said.
The sheriff’s office participates in take-back events during the spring and fall. A permanent drug drop box is also available around the clock at the Yates County Public Safety Building in Penn Yan.
