The Mets overcame a two-run deficit Saturday afternoon, scoring nine runs over the final four innings to defeat the Phillies 10-3 at Citi Field. New York improved to 71-84, while Philadelphia dropped to 85-70.
Carson Benge continued his outstanding rookie season with three hits, including a home run, while setting a new Mets rookie record for hits in a season. Benge’s 19th home run of the year opened the scoring in the second inning when he drove a two-strike changeup over the right-field wall.
Benge entered the seventh inning tied with Pete Alonso for the most hits by a Mets rookie in a season. He broke the record later in the inning with a check-swing single that stayed fair down the third-base line, giving him 156 hits.
Christian Scott kept Philadelphia off the scoreboard through the first three innings before Bryce Harper doubled in the fourth and scored on Alec Bohm’s single. The Phillies then took a 3-1 lead in the fifth after Kyle Schwarber doubled, Trea Turner singled and Harper brought home a run with a sacrifice fly. Bohm followed with a run-scoring single before Jefry Yan entered to finish the inning.
Scott allowed three runs on six hits and one walk while striking out seven in 4.2 innings.
The Mets answered immediately in the bottom of the fifth. Francisco Alvarez launched a three-run home run to put New York back ahead. He finished 2-for-2 with three runs batted in and a run scored.
New York added three runs in the sixth before breaking the game open with four more in the eighth. Francisco Lindor delivered a bases-loaded walk, followed by RBI singles from Juan Soto, Bo Bichette and Benge.
Five Mets relievers combined for 4.1 scoreless innings after Scott’s departure.
The Mets finish their regular-season home schedule against Philadelphia on Sunday at 1:10 p.m. Jonah Tong is scheduled to face Cristopher Sánchez.
