New York State is seeking planning and design proposals for a possible prison with more than 3,000 beds, according to Spectrum News 1.
The location is undetermined, and state corrections officials say no decision to build has been made.
The request follows the closure of Bare Hill Correctional Facility and a partial consolidation at Collins Correctional Facility amid staffing shortages.
Assemblyman Michael Cashman criticized the proposal, arguing the state should address staffing and consider reopening existing facilities.
Corrections officials say they would consult lawmakers, unions and other stakeholders if plans advance.
