Ontario County advances room tax increase request

An Ontario County committee voted 6-0 to advance a request that would allow the county to raise its room occupancy tax from 3% to as much as 6%, according to the Finger Lakes Times.

The full Board of Supervisors must approve the request before it can go to state lawmakers.

If the board approves it, state Sen. Pam Helming and Assemblyman Jeff Gallahan would introduce the request in their respective chambers.

The proposal would remove the tax exemption for properties with three or fewer rentable units and expand permitted uses of the revenue to include parks, infrastructure, water resources and conservation.

The committee also voted 6-0 to retain Finger Lakes Visitors Connection as the county’s tourism promotion agency for 2027.
