Locksley Edmondson, a Cornell professor emeritus known for his scholarship on the African diaspora, died Aug. 18 in Ithaca. He was 92.
Edmondson joined Cornell's Africana Studies and Research Center in 1983, became a full professor in 1987 and retired in 2017. He directed the center from 1991 through 1996.
Colleagues remembered him as an influential political scientist, demanding teacher and generous community member whose work focused on international relations, race relations, Caribbean studies and Pan-Africanism.
Born in Jamaica in 1934, Edmondson studied at the University of Birmingham in England and Queen's University in Canada. His academic career included teaching posts in Canada, Uganda, the United States and the West Indies.
He first taught in Cornell's government department in the early 1970s before joining the Africana studies faculty a decade later.
