Delivery subcontractors warn NYC bill could threaten businesses

Some New York City delivery subcontractors say a proposed law requiring companies such as Amazon to directly employ delivery workers could put their businesses at risk, according to State of Politics.

The Delivery Protection Act, spearheaded by Councilwoman Tiffany Cabán, is intended to strengthen worker protections and prevent large companies from avoiding responsibility for unsafe working conditions.

Rudy Cazares, owner of Bronx-based Cazare Logistics, said his company employs more than 100 workers with benefits and supports stronger safety standards but opposes eliminating subcontractors.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani supports the legislation, and Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice Julie Su said the subcontracting model can allow companies to avoid labor laws and create public safety concerns.

Cazares said eliminating his business could force employees to seek work in New Jersey, Westchester County or Nassau County if they want to remain in the delivery industry.
