Rising prices for everyday essentials are expected to make affordability a major issue for New York voters heading into November’s midterm elections, according to State of Politics.
The average price of gasoline in New York is $4.15 per gallon, while grocery prices have increased 33% since 2019.
Political strategists from both parties said economic concerns could influence voters, though they disagreed over whether state or federal leadership bears greater responsibility.
Cornell ILR Buffalo Office research director Russell Weaver said voters in some states are already supporting candidates who aren’t necessarily aligned with the political establishment.
New York saw significant political shifts during the 2018 midterms, when nine Republican-held legislative seats flipped to Democrats, three Democratic seats went Republican and the state Senate moved to Democratic control.
