New York adds DWI patrols and checkpoints through Labor Day

State Police, county sheriff's offices and local police departments are increasing patrols and sobriety checkpoints through Labor Day as part of a statewide effort targeting impaired, speeding and reckless drivers across New York.

The Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign began Aug. 19 and continues through Monday, Sept. 7. Officers will use marked patrol vehicles and Concealed Identity Traffic Enforcement vehicles, which blend into traffic but display emergency lighting when activated.

During the 2025 enforcement period, agencies statewide issued 131,245 tickets, made 4,125 impaired-driving arrests and wrote 24,905 speeding citations, according to the governor's office. New York State Police will work with county sheriff's offices and local departments during this year's campaign.

State Police Superintendent Steven James said drivers should arrange a safe ride before drinking. State and local officials also urged motorists to avoid distractions, obey speed limits and plan for heavier Labor Day travel.

The Governor's Traffic Safety Committee recommends the free STOP-DWI Have a Plan app, which lets users designate a driver, contact a taxi or ride-share service, review impaired-driving penalties and report a suspected drunk or drugged driver. The app is available for Apple, Android and Windows devices.

Motorists must also follow New York's Move Over Law by slowing down and changing lanes when it is safe to do so for vehicles stopped along the roadway.
