New York is making $35 million available to public agencies and local governments for large electric vehicle charging projects on publicly owned property.

The Charge Ready NY Large Public Sector Project program will support the purchase and installation of Level 2 chargers that are available for public use. The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority is accepting proposals through Oct. 20.

Eligible applicants include state agencies and authorities, local governments and the SUNY and CUNY systems. Projects may receive between $1 million and $15 million, with state funding covering up to 80% of eligible purchase and installation costs. Proposals are due by 3 p.m. Oct. 20.

NYSERDA plans to hold an informational webinar at 3 p.m. Sept. 15. Applicants must use approved vendors and equipment identified through the agency's competitive qualification process.

The program is intended to add charging capacity at public-sector sites and expand public access to charging. State officials said New York had more than 21,000 public and private charging ports and more than 331,000 electric vehicles on the road as of July 2026.
