The First Responders 5K community event will bring runners and walkers to Webster on Friday, Sept. 4, while raising money for an organization that assists first responders dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder.
The race is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. at Webster Fireman's Field. Proceeds will benefit FRST Agency, which provides support, awareness, assets and services for first responders seeking help with the effects of PTSD, according to organizers.
The event recognizes police officers, firefighters, emergency medical technicians, 911 operators and their families. Organizers said the course will run through village neighborhoods and will include cash prizes for the top three men and women, age-group awards and recognition for the fastest first responder department team.
Participants who register by Aug. 16 are guaranteed a race shirt. Active-duty first responders are eligible for a special registration rate.
Organizers are also seeking 44 volunteers, with road marshal positions listed as the top need. Volunteers are also needed at a water stop and the finish line.
Several roads are expected to be affected from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., including Sanford Street, South Avenue, Fuller Avenue, Dunning Avenue, Meadow Drive, Southwick Drive, Hawley Drive, Hefner Drive, Judson Street, Harmon Street and Curtice Park.
Route 250 between State Road and Main Street is expected to close briefly before traffic is restricted for about an hour. Organizers said local residential traffic will be delayed but accommodated with assistance from Webster police and firefighters.
