New York proposes stricter landfill leachate rules

New York is proposing first-in-the-nation rules requiring landfill leachate to be treated for PFAS and other contaminants before disposal, according to the Finger Lakes Times.

The regulations could affect Seneca Meadows and the Ontario County Landfill, along with other public, private and construction-debris facilities statewide.

State officials said at least $75 million in grant funding would be available to help municipally owned landfills install treatment systems and meet the proposed standards.

Operators of both local landfills said they have already invested in PFAS removal technology and have been working with regulators on the issue for years.

The Department of Environmental Conservation will accept public comments through Sept. 9 and hold two virtual hearings Sept. 2.
