Fall Weather Forecast 2026 Shows Which US States Could See Cooler Hotter or Wetter Weather

With summer giving way to fall, millions of Americans are already contemplating what will follow. Some early season forecasts indicate warmer-than-average temperatures, some below-average temperatures and changing rainfall patterns across the U.S. The Fall 2026 Weather Forecast is more about variation than one big weather trend across the country. Much of the country in the South and West will be warmer than normal for much of the season, while parts of the northern Plains and Upper Midwest may be cooler than normal. Rainfall, too, will be a mixed bag, with some places seeing wetter-than-normal conditions while others will be fairly dry.

South and West Are Expected to Warm Up

Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, and portions of California are likely to be warmer than their historical normals. High-pressure systems have a tendency to keep daytime temperatures on the warm side, especially in the initial weeks of October. This might increase the need for air conditioning in some parts of the country, and increase the chances of dry conditions where rain is still rare. Residents in dry areas should also be aware of ongoing wildfire hazards.

Northern States May Have Cooler Weather

Not all of the country is going to stay warm. Forecast models indicate the potential for below-average temperatures in parts of the northern Plains, Upper Midwest, and Great Lakes region throughout the thick of the season.

Early cold blasts might hit North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and nearby areas sooner than in previous years. Those conditions could produce timely, and maybe even a little early, brilliant fall foliage in some areas. Farmers will also be looking for any early frost events that may affect late-season crops.

Parts of the East May See a Developing Weather Pattern

Rainfall projections point to above-normal rainfall over multiple regions of the eastern United States in the fall, especially the Southeast and the Ohio Valley. More rain is possible with additional storm systems that might increase soil moisture in some areas and perhaps increase the risk of localized flooding. A few sections of the Northwest and a few areas of the Southwest may still get below-normal rainfall, extending dry weather into the fall months.

Reading the Seasonal Outlook

Longer-term estimates are based on large-scale climate patterns, ocean temperatures, and atmospheric changes. They give you a general notion of what a season is going to be like, but they can’t tell you what the weather is going to be like on any individual day, or even over the course of weeks.

Meteorologists recommend checking local weather updates on occasion, especially if you have travel plans, outdoor events, or agricultural interests. When new climate data comes in, it helps forecasters improve seasonal outlooks and feel more confident in regional trends.

Looking Ahead to Fall 2026

The complete fall outlook shows a season of contrasts across the U.S. Most of the southern and western states are likely to be warmer than average, while some milder temperatures may develop over much of the northern tier. Meanwhile, rainfall forecasts are all over the map, with wetter weather in parts of the East and ongoing drought for those in the West. As always, the best reference for the entire fall season is regular forecast updates, as changing weather patterns could modify local conditions.
