Yankees’ Ben Rice to participate in Home Run Derby

Ben Rice will represent the New York Yankees in this year’s Home Run Derby, announcing Tuesday that he will compete in the annual power-hitting showcase on July 13 in Philadelphia.

The 27-year-old first baseman enters the event leading the Yankees with 25 home runs and becomes the club’s second consecutive participant after Jazz Chisholm Jr. competed last season.

Rice revealed on social media that his father, Dan Rice, will serve as his pitcher during the contest. Dan Rice, who pitched for Brown University in the 1980s, has already begun preparing with his son ahead of the event. Through his first three major league seasons, Rice has totaled 58 career home runs while emerging as one of the American League’s top power threats.

Rice will attempt to become the first Yankees player to capture the Home Run Derby since Aaron Judge’s victory in 2017. Judge is one of four Yankees to win the event, joining Tino Martinez in 1997, Jason Giambi in 2002, and Robinson Canó in 2011.Â
