Port Byron expands career pathways for students

Port Byron Central School District is expanding college and career readiness opportunities, giving students more options to explore potential careers and earn college credits before graduation.

District leaders say the effort reflects a deliberate shift over the last several years to move beyond a one-size-fits-all approach to post-graduation planning, helping students pursue pathways that range from four-year colleges and trade schools to apprenticeships, military service and direct entry into the workforce.

Assistant Superintendent Katie Naples and school counselors Kevin Barber and Stacey Sereno said the district has become more intentional about connecting students with opportunities that match their interests and career goals. Those efforts include college visits, career exploration activities, college fairs, dual-enrollment coursework and expanded distance learning options.

One of the district’s largest investments has been increasing access to college-level courses through partnerships with Cayuga Community College and CiTi BOCES. Students can begin taking college classes as early as the summer before 10th grade, and the district recently added a second distance learning classroom that supports eight different academic pathways. About 30 students are expected to take college courses this summer, with another 30 anticipated to participate in distance learning programs next year.

District officials said the opportunities allow students to test potential career interests while still in high school and reduce future college costs by earning credits early. This year, one student earned an associate degree before graduating from high school, and seven more students are on track to do the same next year.

Port Byron also partners with On Point for College to help students navigate applications and financial aid forms, while continuing to expand opportunities for students pursuing skilled trades through programs such as welding and culinary arts. Career exploration begins well before high school through initiatives including Xello, MACNY programs and career cluster activities designed to expose students to a variety of professions throughout their K-12 education.
