Boil water notice issued for parts of Waterloo

A water main break in the Village of Waterloo prompted a boil water notice Tuesday for dozens of properties after a loss of pressure raised concerns about potential contamination in the water system.

The advisory applies to properties located at 4-56 West Elizabeth Street and 17-38 Center Street, according to the Seneca County Health Department. Residents in the affected area are being told to boil tap water for at least one minute before using it for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth or washing dishes.

Health officials said the water system lost pressure around 11:50 a.m. on June 2 because of the water main break. When pressure drops, untreated water and harmful microbes can potentially enter the distribution system.

The village began repairs on the water line Tuesday. Officials said the boil water notice is expected to remain in effect for about three days while repairs are completed and water samples are collected and tested. Residents will be notified when the advisory is lifted.

The Village of Waterloo and Seneca County Health Department are encouraging residents to share the notice with neighbors, businesses and others who may not receive the advisory directly.
