UAlbany study finds more students gambling

The share of University at Albany students reporting gambling rose from 45% to 60% over several years, according to the Times Union.

Researcher Jessica Martin found that 10% of students who gambled met the criteria for problem gambling, and 40% of that group reported using financial aid money to support it.

The report examined the growth of mobile sports betting and prediction markets, which allow users as young as 18 to open accounts.

Experts cited frequent betting opportunities, advertising and social pressure as concerns for young adults.

A New York bill to restrict mobile sports betting ads passed the Assembly but died in the Senate.
