Depew man sentenced to 30 years in federal child exploitation case

A Depew man was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison after being convicted of producing and possessing child sexual abuse material, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of New York announced Friday.

Dustin Coffelt, 37, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Lawrence Vilardo. The case began when Depew police received a report in July 2022 that he had sexually abused a 13-year-old girl, according to federal prosecutors.

Investigators said Coffelt told Depew and Cheektowaga police on July 29, 2022, that he had abused the child and produced explicit photographs of her. A search of a phone he gave detectives found additional images, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

The FBI arrested Coffelt on Aug. 11, 2022. Depew and Cheektowaga police and the FBI investigated the case, which led to the federal conviction and sentence.
