Syracuse airport awarded .7 million federal grant for major deicing expansion project

Syracuse Hancock International Airport is set for a major winter operations upgrade after federal officials announced nearly $18.7 million in funding to expand the airport’s aircraft deicing facilities.

U.S. Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced Thursday that Syracuse International Airport will receive $18,745,345 through the Airport Infrastructure Grant Program created under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Law.

The funding will support expansion of the airport’s public-use deicing pad, where aircraft are sprayed to remove snow, ice and frost before takeoff during winter weather conditions.

Airport officials said the project will reconstruct existing space and add new operational space as part of the third phase of a broader modernization effort. Associated equipment used in deicing operations has also reached the end of its useful life, according to the announcement.

Schumer said the investment comes as Central New York prepares for long-term economic growth tied to Micron’s planned semiconductor project and related regional development.

“With Micron coming to Syracuse and the region experiencing a boom in economic growth, it is more important than ever to ensure our infrastructure can keep up with the needs of businesses and travelers,” Schumer said.

Gillibrand described Syracuse Hancock International Airport as a critical transportation and commerce hub for the region, saying the upgrades would improve safety and modernize airport operations.

Jason Terreri, executive director of the Syracuse Regional Airport Authority, said the project is expected to improve winter reliability, reduce delays and help position the airport for future growth.

The Airport Infrastructure Grant program has become a significant source of federal funding for airport infrastructure and safety projects across Central New York and other regions of the state.

Syracuse Hancock International Airport has undergone extensive upgrades in recent years, including terminal renovations, expanded passenger amenities and infrastructure improvements aimed at accommodating growing passenger demand and regional economic development.
