Micron candidate forum Sunday in Clay will focus on jobs and community protections

Central New York residents can question candidates and elected officials about jobs, environmental protections and community benefits tied to Micron's planned semiconductor development at a forum Sunday, Oct. 18, in Clay.

Neighbors for a Better Micron will host the candidate forum and open house from 1 to 4 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 4947 Route 31. Residents can register through the organizers' RSVP form.

Residents can ask about Micron's long-term impact

The coalition said the event will bring residents together with candidates and public officials ahead of the November election to discuss how the development could affect the region over the coming decades.

Topics include safe, well-paying jobs, environmental protections and the coalition's call for a recognized, enforceable community benefits agreement. The forum is intended to let residents meet participants face-to-face, ask questions and learn where they stand on those issues.

According to the organizers, confirmed attendees include a bipartisan group of current officials and candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives, New York State Senate, State Assembly, Onondaga County and Town of Clay offices.

The coalition said all candidates for the offices represented have been invited and participating candidates will receive an equal opportunity to share their views.

Livestream and participation information

The forum will also be livestreamed on the Neighbors for a Better Micron Facebook page and its Instagram page.

Neighbors for a Better Micron describes itself as a group of local residents concerned about the health, environmental and community effects of Micron's development in Clay and Cicero. The organization says it does not support or oppose candidates for public office and describes Sunday's event as nonpartisan.
