Waterloo explores privatizing village trash pickup after decades of municipal service

Waterloo officials are exploring a major change to village trash collection that could end decades of municipal curbside pickup, according to the Finger Lakes Times.

Village leaders voted to seek proposals from private trash haulers as a possible replacement for the village-run sanitation department. Mayor Walt Bennett said officials previously resisted outsourcing because of customer service concerns, but recent conversations with contractors eased those worries.

The village currently employs two full-time sanitation workers and budgets about $163,000 annually for curbside pickup. Officials said any contractor would be expected to retain current workers if a deal moves forward. Cardinal Disposal already handles trash collection in nearby Seneca Falls.
