Christian Scott struck out a career-high-tying eight batters and Ronny Mauricio delivered a go-ahead home run as the New York Mets defeated the Los Angeles Angels 4-3 on Friday night at Angel Stadium, opening their nine-game road trip with a comeback victory.
After being held in check early, New York’s offense came alive in the middle innings. Francisco Alvarez got the Mets on the board with an RBI single in the sixth, and Marcus Semien followed with a two-out hit to drive in two runs and tie the game at 3-3. Mauricio then snapped a hitless stretch with a solo shot to right-center in the seventh, giving the Mets their first lead of the night.
Scott provided a steady presence on the mound, allowing three runs, two earned, on three hits across his outing while issuing no walks. The right-hander rebounded effectively, showing improved command and working efficiently through the Angels’ lineup.
The bullpen preserved the lead with a dominant finish. Huascar Brazobán, Brooks Raley, Luke Weaver and Devin Williams combined to retire the final 12 batters of the game. Weaver secured a hold, while Williams closed the door with a clean ninth inning for the save.
Juan Soto contributed offensively and defensively in his return to the outfield, adding a hit and helping spark the sixth-inning rally.
The Mets will continue their series against the Angels on Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for 9:38 p.m. Nolan McLean is slated to start for New York against Reid Detmers.
