The Cornell women’s lacrosse team upset the Yale Bulldogs 11-10 on Saturday afternoon at Schoellkopf Field, closing the regular season with a statement win on Senior Day. Cornell set the tone early against the Ivy League-leading and nationally ranked opponent, improving its record while handing Yale its first conference loss of the season.
The Big Red controlled play from the opening draw, jumping out to a three-goal lead and never trailing. Ella Wilmot spearheaded the early surge, recording a season-high five assists while directing the offense with precision. Emily Iacobellis delivered a standout performance with four goals and an assist, while Lilly Whaling added three goals and two assists to fuel a balanced attack.
Cornell carried a 7-5 advantage into halftime and maintained control through much of the second half, despite several pushes from Yale. Ellie Bergin contributed two goals and an assist, and Holly Newman added a score as the Big Red continued to generate offense in key moments.
Possession proved to be a decisive factor, as Cornell dominated the draw circle 16-7 behind Caitlin Tully and Addy Smith. Tully posted a career-high seven draw controls, while Smith added five. Defensively, Cornell forced 10 turnovers and executed a perfect clearing effort, limiting Yale’s opportunities even while facing multiple man-up situations.
Yale mounted a late comeback attempt, but Cornell’s defense and goaltending held firm down the stretch to secure the one-goal victory and cap a long-awaited response after last season’s loss.
Cornell will await the outcome of the Ivy League standings to determine postseason positioning, with its next game to be announced following the conclusion of conference play.
