Volunteers sought for Owasco Lake watershed cleanup May 9

A community-wide effort to clean up the Owasco Lake watershed is set for May 9, with organizers calling on volunteers to help remove litter from roadsides and shoreline areas.

The cleanup, part of Lake Friendly Living Awareness Month, will take place from 9 a.m. to noon at multiple locations throughout the watershed, followed by a coordinated effort at Emerson Park.

Participants will begin the morning by independently clearing roadside ditches between 9 and 10:30 a.m. Volunteers will then regroup at the Emerson Park pavilion at 10:30 a.m. to continue cleanup efforts along the lake’s northern shoreline. Organizers say lunch will be provided.

The event is organized by the Owasco Watershed Lake Association and partners, with a focus on reducing pollution and protecting water quality in one of the Finger Lakes’ key ecosystems.

Volunteers are asked to bring their own supplies, including trash bags, gloves, reflective vests, and sturdy footwear. Organizers also recommend wearing long sleeves and pants to prevent tick exposure while working near roadsides and wooded areas.

Those interested in participating are encouraged to sign up in advance and indicate their preferred cleanup location, with organizers offering assistance for transportation or equipment if needed.
