Livingston County launches online portal for historic records

Thousands of historical documents and images from Livingston County are now accessible online through a newly launched digital collections platform.

County officials announced this week that the Historian’s Office has made more than 4,000 items available through the portal, including postcards, photographs, church records, naturalization documents, and personal diaries.

The new system allows researchers to browse and search digitized materials remotely, marking a significant expansion in access to local history resources that were previously only available in person. Officials say the collection represents just a portion of the county’s full archive, with additional materials expected to be added on a regular basis.

The platform is integrated with the Historian’s existing catalog, which includes descriptions of nearly 50,000 archival items. Some entries now link directly to digitized versions, allowing users to view original documents or transcriptions online.

County Historian Holly Watson said the effort is part of a broader push to preserve and share community history while meeting the growing demand for online research tools.

Officials noted that not all materials have been digitized yet, and residents can still request items or assistance directly from the Historian’s Office. Services, including research help and digital file requests, remain free to the public.

The county plans to continue expanding the online collection in the coming months as digitization efforts move forward.
