State regulators shut down a proposal to ease utility shutoff rules, keeping strong protections in place, according to News10NBC. The Public Service Commission rejected requests from RG&E and NYSEG to change temperature thresholds.
Under the rules, utilities still can’t shut off service when it’s 90 degrees or hotter or 32 degrees or colder. Additional limits restrict shutoffs to certain weekdays and require advance notice.
Officials say the protections aim to prevent harm during extreme weather. A separate decision on utility rate hikes is still expected later this summer.
