Nursing homes warn they’re losing money on nearly every Medicaid patient and want a major funding boost, according to WETM. Advocates and Democratic lawmakers are pushing for half of a $1.5 billion health care fund in the state budget.
Providers say Medicaid covers only about 75% of care costs, leaving facilities short roughly $150 per resident each day. Many nonprofit homes now operate at a loss, and dozens have closed in recent years.
Leaders argue underfunding strains the entire system, backing up hospitals and emergency rooms. Lawmakers say additional funding could help stabilize care as demand grows.
