Gillibrand proposes tax rebates tied to tariffs

U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is calling for tax rebates to help working families facing rising prices and job losses.

Gillibrand announced the proposal March 19, saying her plan would use revenue from federal tariffs to fund payments to eligible households.

The proposed Tariff Refunds for Working Families Act would provide rebates to individuals earning up to $90,000, heads of household earning up to $120,000 and joint filers earning up to $180,000.

Payments would include $600 for individual filers, $600 for heads of household and $1,200 for joint filers, along with an additional $600 per dependent child.

Gillibrand said the proposal comes amid reported job losses tied to tariffs, including nearly 200,000 positions nationwide in manufacturing, transportation and warehousing.

She also cited estimates that tariffs are costing New York households about $4,200 annually.

“Working families are struggling amid higher prices and substantial job losses due to President Trump’s reckless tariffs,” Gillibrand said. “My Tariff Refunds for Working Families Act would provide American consumers with direct tax rebates, delivering real financial relief to families across New York and putting money back directly into their pockets. This commonsense legislation would return the billions of dollars that the government has collected via illegal tariffs to hardworking families who need relief. I am committed to getting it across the finish line.”
