DEC warns hikers about dangerous trails

Hikers planning trips to the Adirondacks or Catskills may want to reconsider after flooding and unstable trail conditions emerged this week, according to the Times Union.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation said recent warm temperatures and rain caused snowmelt, washed-out bridges and dangerous water crossings across the region. Officials reported some frozen lakes covered by up to two feet of standing water.

Popular areas like the High Peaks Wilderness are seeing rapidly changing conditions. The DEC urges hikers to know their routes, plan alternatives and avoid risky water crossings as conditions can turn dangerous quickly.
