Drivers in northern Cayuga County will face a detour for several weeks as crews begin work on a bridge over the New York State Thruway.
The Route 90 bridge over Interstate 90 in the Town of Montezuma is scheduled to close Wednesday, March 4 for approximately three weeks, according to the New York State Thruway Authority.
The bridge sits between Thruway Exit 40 in Weedsport and Exit 41 in Waterloo and carries about 2,600 vehicles per day.
During construction, an 11-mile signed detour will direct drivers using Route 90 south of the Thruway to travel west on Route 31, south on Route 89, and then east on Route 20 before reconnecting with Route 90.
Slate Hill Constructors of Warners is the contractor handling the project.
Drivers on the Thruway may also encounter lane closures in the area while work is underway. Transportation officials are urging motorists to slow down and follow posted work zone speed limits.
The project schedule is weather dependent and could change.
