Wednesday night featured two major Wayne-Finger Lakes matchups, as the Waterloo girls faced top-seeded Dansville in the Class B1 championship at Finger Lakes Community College while the Wayne and Geneva boys met for the third time this season with a trip to the Blue Cross Arena on the line.
The Tigers wasted no time asserting control, racing out to a 24-0 lead after the opening quarter and cruising to another sectional crown with a 34-point victory over the Mustangs. The title marks the 11th in program history and the fourth in the last six seasons.
In the boys semifinal, Geneva grabbed a seven-point lead after the first quarter, but Wayne answered with a strong second to take a one-point edge into halftime. The Panthers reclaimed a two-point lead after three before the Eagles erased a six-point deficit midway through the fourth quarter. Wayne closed the game on a 15-2 run over the final four minutes and 35 seconds to secure a spot in its third straight Class A championship game Saturday afternoon. The Eagles will face No. 4 seed Monroe, which upset top-seeded East High.
