DiNapoli warns Big Tech on data centers

New York’s top financial watchdog is warning Big Tech that booming data centers could drive up energy costs for everyday consumers, according to Spectrum News 1.

State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli sent letters to 19 technology companies, including Meta and TeraWulf, raising concerns about the rapid growth of large-scale data centers. He warned the projects could increase electricity bills, strain power grids, consume large amounts of water and impact local land.

DiNapoli urged companies to adopt a “community-first” approach by working with local governments, operating transparently and paying for their own infrastructure costs instead of shifting the burden to ratepayers.
