HS BASKETBALL REPORT: Lyons, Honeoye boys advance to sectional finals; Canandaigua girls pull off upset

Sectional basketball continued Monday night as semifinal action got underway, and two Wayne-Finger Lakes programs made sure their seasons would continue into championship weekend.

A pair of boys games tipped off the week at Finger Lakes Community College, beginning with Lyons battling rival Gananda in Class C1 in the third meeting between the teams this season. Honeoye followed with its Class C2 matchup against Notre Dame Batavia. Both the Lions and Bulldogs emerged victorious, punching their tickets to Blue Cross Arena on Saturday night. Lyons returns to the sectional finals after falling one game short last season, while Honeoye is back in the title game looking to repeat as champions.

On the girls side, Canandaigua edged Pittsford Mendon by one point to advance in Class AA2, while Victor fell just short against top-seeded Penfield in Class AA1.

Check out all the scores, stats, brackets, and Tuesdayโ€™s schedule below.

BOYS BASKETBALL (3/2)

Class C1 Semifinals
No. 1 Lyons (21-2) 72
No. 4 Gananda (19-4) 58

The game opened at a fast pace, with both teams trading the lead throughout the first six minutes. The Lions began to create separation late in the opening quarter, turning a one-point deficit into a four-point advantage by the end of the period. Lyons took full control in the second quarter, outscoring the Blue Panthers 21-11 to carry a 14-point lead into halftime, fueled by defensive stops that sparked transition opportunities. The gap only widened after the break, as Lyons pushed the margin to 21 points in the third quarter while continuing to apply pressure at both ends of the floor. From there, the Lions cruised to the finish line, securing their spot in the Class C1 championship game. Lyons will now face No. 2 Geneseo for the title Saturday at 5 p.m. at the Blue Cross Arena.

Class C2 Semifinals
No. 6 Notre Dame Batavia (18-5) 53
No. 2 Honeoye (21-2) 60

Offense was hard to find early, as both teams struggled to generate consistent scoring in the first half. The game was tied 10-10 at the end of the first quarter before the Bulldogs inched ahead, carrying a 23-21 lead into halftime. Honeoye found another gear coming out of the break, taking control in the third quarter by attacking the paint while the Fighting Irish dealt with foul trouble. The Bulldogs outscored Notre Dame Batavia 21-12 in the frame to build a nine-point cushion and never looked back. The Washburn brothers combined for 29 of the teamโ€™s 37 second-half points to power the surge. Honeoye will now look to secure its second straight sectional championship when it takes on No. 8 York in the Class C2 title game Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Blue Cross Arena.
