Some Tompkins County residents opened winter bills that doubled or tripled, just as NYSEG seeks steep rate hikes, according to local officials. The utility wants state approval to raise electric delivery rates about 24% and natural gas about 34%.
County leaders say brutal cold and soaring wholesale energy prices drove recent spikes, while the proposed increases would push bills even higher this spring. NYSEG leaders argue they don’t control supply costs and need delivery hikes to fund infrastructure, storm recovery and state-mandated programs.
Lawmakers blasted the limited public access to the Albany hearing and accused the company of years of poor maintenance. A state decision could come by May, determining how much more customers will pay.
