Illegal automatic weapon leads to arrests in Schuyler County

Deputies responding to reports of automatic gunfire in Schuyler County found two men with an illegal fully automatic rifle and other weapons.

Christopher D. Barrett, 32, of Corning, and Bret R. Kimble, 32, of Corning, were arrested after deputies responded around 1:40 p.m. March 8 to the 1300 block of County Road 16 in the Town of Orange.


Investigators said deputies located individuals shooting in the area and discovered an Anderson Manufacturing AM-15 rifle that had been converted to fire fully automatic.

Deputies also recovered an unserialized “ghost” .45-caliber handgun and four large-capacity ammunition feeding devices.

Barrett faces four counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, a Class D felony.

Authorities said Barrett is a two-time convicted felon and also has a pending felony charge for criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree in Steuben County.

He was arraigned in Schuyler County Centralized Arraignment Part Court and remanded to the Schuyler County Jail without bail.

Kimble faces one count of criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, a Class D felony.

He was also arraigned in Schuyler County Centralized Arraignment Part Court and remanded to the Schuyler County Jail in lieu of bail.
