May tackles budget, energy at town hall

A tough state budget and rising utility bills dominated a 90-minute town hall in Auburn, according to The Citizen. Rachel May told residents at Cayuga Community College that federal cuts under President Donald Trump could cost New York $13 billion in Medicaid funds.

May said lawmakers expected some shortfalls but will need to rein in spending. She pushed for universal child care, rural hospital support, consumer protections and changes to housing rules tied to SEQRA. She also addressed high auto insurance and utility costs.

Residents pressed her on immigration enforcement and local solar and wind projects. May backed legal aid for immigrants, supported renewable energy, and pledged to explore creating a statewide animal abuse registry.
