Sky-high utility bills squeeze CNY businesses

A longtime Lake George fishing shop may shut its doors as National Grid bills climb, according to CNY Central. Owner Jeff Goldberg says his monthly utility costs now run about $4,500, forcing him to lay off staff and rethink staying open.

The spike follows a statewide rate hike the Public Service Commission approved in August. Since then, more than 4,500 customers have flooded the Department of Public Service website with complaints.

Families feel it, too. Dolores Zupky says she keeps her thermostat at 64 degrees to manage costs while caring for her children and disabled mother.

National Grid says it offers assistance programs and only shuts off service as a last resort if customers don’t communicate.
