State parks hiring lifeguards for summer

New York State Parks is gearing up for summer and needs lifeguards to staff beaches and pools statewide.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation has launched its annual recruitment push for the upcoming swimming season. Officials say the jobs offer a mix of pay, experience, and time outdoors.

State Parks plans to hire about 1,100 lifeguards to work at roughly 80 state park beaches and pools. Positions are open across the state, including facilities outside Long Island.

“We’re excited to welcome both returning and new dedicated lifeguards to New York State Parks,” said Acting Commissioner Kathy Moser. “Lifeguards play a critical role at our pools and beaches, helping protect the millions of visitors who enjoy our facilities each year.”

The starting pay ranges from $21.86 to $24.04 per hour, depending on location. Wages may increase over time.

Candidates must pass a qualifying exam and hold lifeguarding and CPR certifications at the time of employment. Parks officials encourage students and seasonal workers to apply early as school breaks approach.

Applicants for non-Long Island locations can qualify at any scheduled testing site. New hiring procedures for Long Island lifeguard candidates are scheduled for June 7.

A full schedule of qualifying exams, eligibility requirements, and applications is available on the State Parks website. Officials say new qualifying dates will be added on a rolling basis, and pre-registration is strongly encouraged.
