Fight over future of Great Northern Mall site continues

A high-profile redevelopment deal has collapsed into dueling lawsuits over a shuttered shopping mall, according to syracuse.com. Owners of the vacant Great Northern Mall and a former housing partner are now accusing each other of bad faith and financial misconduct.

Syracuse-based Hart Lyman Cos. and Rochester-based Conifer Housing split last year but now disagree over a failed land transfer tied to their breakup. Hart and Lyman claim Conifer delayed approvals to force a $1.5 million payout, while Conifer is suing to collect that money under personal guarantees.

David Lanzillo, vice president of marketing and communications for Conifer added the following: “The claims against Conifer are false, and we will ensure Hart Lyman lives up to its obligations. As the largest Upstate affordable housing developer, owner, and manager, our business remains robust and strong.  While the Great Northern Mall project initially represented a significant opportunity to deliver affordable housing on a large scale, we and Hart Lyman mutually agreed to end our relationship last year.  We remain committed to delivering high-quality affordable housing across New York State, Onondaga County, and the Town of Clay.”

Despite the legal fight, the mall’s owners say redevelopment plans remain on track as they seek a new partner.
