DMV cracks down on repeat drivers

New York drivers could lose their licenses faster under tougher traffic penalties rolling out later this month, according to officials. The New York Department of Motor Vehicles is overhauling its point system to hit repeat and high-risk drivers harder.

The changes expand the DMV’s look-back period from 18 to 24 months and raise point totals for common violations. Driving 10 mph over the limit now brings four points, while cellphone use jumps to six. Serious offenses like reckless driving or passing a stopped school bus can trigger eight points.

Legal experts say the new rules lower the threshold for license suspensions, putting frequent offenders at greater risk of losing driving privileges.
