The attack unfolded shortly before 1 p.m. Thursday at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan.

Investigators say the suspect drove a truck into the synagogue’s front entrance before opening fire.

Security personnel immediately responded and exchanged gunfire with the attacker.

Key details confirmed by authorities:

  • The gunman was killed during the confrontation
  • A security guard was injured and hospitalized
  • All children and staff were reported safe

At the time of the attack, the synagogue’s school was in session with about 140 children and staff inside.

Security response likely prevented a larger tragedy

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard praised the synagogue’s security staff for their quick response.

Authorities said the guards’ actions likely prevented more injuries or fatalities.

The building went into immediate lockdown as teachers sheltered students in classrooms.

Parents were notified via text message that the suspect had been taken down and that all children were safe.

Suspect identified by federal authorities

Federal officials later identified the suspect as 41-year-old Ayman Mohamad Ghazali.

Authorities say:

  • He lived in Dearborn Heights, Michigan
  • He was born in Lebanon

Investigators are examining whether the suspect had personal motives tied to events in the Middle East.

Reports indicate some of his relatives were recently killed in a military strike in Lebanon.

Law enforcement officials say the synagogue attack appears to be a targeted act of violence.

The FBI, Department of Homeland Security, and multiple local agencies are now involved in the investigation.

Police also searched the surrounding area to determine whether the suspect acted alone.

Authorities later indicated there was no ongoing threat.
