Finger Lakes Community College is giving students and community members a closer look at a summer study trip to South Africa during an on-campus information session next week. The event will highlight a travel course centered on wildlife, culture, and history.
The session, titled “Snapshots and Stories: An FLCC Study Abroad Experience in South Africa,” starts at 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, in Stage 14 on the second floor of the Student Center at FLCC’s Canandaigua campus.
The South Africa trip runs from July 3 to July 20 and is open to students, alumni, and community members who are at least 18 years old. Faculty leaders John Bateman and Maura Sullivan will share photos and stories from a similar trip in 2024 and explain what participants can expect this summer.

During the course, travelers learn wildlife tracking techniques and study plants and animals through guided game drives and walking safaris at a South African wildlife refuge. The itinerary also includes lessons on the country’s social history and a visit to the former home of Nelson Mandela.
“It is absolutely incredible, a life-changing experience for me and I think for everyone else,” Bateman said.
More information about costs and trip details is available on the FLCC website.
