Deputies said they arrived around 10:15 p.m. and found Johnston in the driveway acting combative and aggressive. Deputies detained him, but he continued to resist while they investigated the incident.

Investigators determined that Johnston and a female family member had argued verbally before the situation escalated. Deputies said Johnston placed his hands around her neck and strangled her. The woman declined medical treatment.

Deputies brought Johnston to the Public Safety Building for processing and then to the Cayuga County Jail for CAP arraignment. He later appeared in Victory Town Court on Jan. 21 at 6 p.m.

Anyone with information about the incident can contact the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office. Tips can also be submitted anonymously online or through the SaferWatch app.

Johnston is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
