Cornell women’s basketball overmatched by Harvard

Cornell women’s basketball suffered an 84-38 setback to Harvard Crimson on Saturday afternoon at Newman Arena, as Harvard capitalized on turnovers and efficient shooting in Ivy League play.

Harvard scored 39 points off 31 Cornell turnovers and led wire-to-wire. The Crimson shot 49.3% from the field, including 12-of-26 from three-point range, and held a 35-27 edge on the glass. Mary Hollensteiner paced Harvard with 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting, knocking down six three-pointers. Olivia Jones added 17 points and nine assists, while Karlee White finished with 10 points.

Cornell struggled to find rhythm offensively, finishing 13-of-38 from the floor and 6-of-16 from beyond the arc. Senior Emily Pape led Cornell with nine points, five rebounds and three assists, while Clarke Jackson and Ally Pape scored seven points apiece.

Harvard jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the opening minutes and closed the first quarter ahead 19-10. Cornell briefly trimmed the deficit early in the second quarter, but a 12-0 Harvard run pushed the margin into double digits. The Crimson closed the half on a 16-5 surge to take a 49-24 lead into intermission.

Any momentum was short-lived after halftime, as Harvard opened the third quarter with a 10-0 run and extended its advantage to 68-34 entering the fourth. Cornell was held to four points in the final period as Harvard closed out the win.

Cornell fell to 7-11 overall and 2-3 in Ivy League play. The Big Red return to action Friday, January 30, traveling to face Penn Quakers at 6 p.m.
