Vacant apartments across Ontario County could soon get a second chance, as local officials push for more state funding to bring unused housing back to life.
The Ontario County Economic Development Corporation will host an informational session later this month for property owners interested in a second round of funding through the New York State Vacant Rental Program.
How does the program work?
The county is applying for additional state funding to continue renovating vacant apartments and residential buildings. The goal is to increase the supply of quality rental housing while helping property owners cover renovation costs.
Through the program, eligible owners can receive grants ranging from $50,000 to $75,000 per unit. The money can cover code compliance work, safety improvements, and other upgrades needed to make units livable.
When will the event be happening?
The session is scheduled for Tuesday, January 28, at 6 p.m. It will take place at 1000 County Road 8 in Farmington.
Organizers plan to walk attendees through program details, including eligibility rules, allowed uses of funds, and the application process. Property owners will also have time to ask questions and discuss potential projects.
What has interest been like so far?
Program officials say several properties are already preparing to begin construction, with many more vacant units across the county ready for reinvestment.
“This next round of the Vacant Rental Program represents a major opportunity for property owners to secure funding, revitalize vacant buildings, and help meet the growing demand for quality rental housing in our communities,” said Nichola Ostrander, a consultant with CMD Group that manages the program.
Property owners, landlords, and developers with vacant or soon-to-be-vacant residential units are encouraged to attend. No prior application is required to take part in the session.
More information about the Vacant Rental Program is available through Ontario County’s website.
