Traffic stop leads to felony gun arrest in Rochester

A routine traffic stop in Rochester led to felony weapon charges against a city man earlier this month.

New York State Police arrested a 23-year-old Rochester man on Jan. 16 after troopers stopped a vehicle on Portland Avenue near Dickinson Street for traffic violations.

Troopers identified the front-seat passenger as Eric Gevon Moye Jr. While speaking with him, they say they saw a handgun partially concealed in his jacket pocket. Troopers removed Moye from the vehicle without incident.

A search uncovered a loaded Taurus G2C 9mm handgun with a round in the chamber and additional ammunition in the magazine, police said.

Moye was charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, a felony, and criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree.

State Police said a pistol permit check confirmed Moye does not have a valid New York State pistol permit. Troopers seized the firearm and ammunition as evidence.

The driver of the vehicle received traffic citations and was released at the scene.

Troopers processed Moye at State Police Rochester and transported him to the Monroe County Jail for centralized arraignment proceedings.
