Schine theater funds detailed: What’s next for historic Auburn landmark?

After years of silence and stalled progress, a closer look shows where most public money tied to the Auburn Schine Theater actually went, according to The Citizen.

Records show roughly $1.7 million funded repairs, studies, and cleanup at the historic Auburn Schine Theater, with the bulk spent on roof work, asbestos removal, and consulting. State preservation grants covered about $433,000 over 15 years, while the City of Auburn later directed $800,000 toward hazardous material remediation and stabilization.

Despite the spending, the theater never reopened. The city repossessed the property last year and listed it for sale at $100,000. Officials estimate it still needs $6 million to $12 million to fully reopen.
