Push grows to curb landfill methane in New York

A new report warns New York could sharply cut dangerous landfill emissions with simple fixes, according to Finger Lakes Times. Research from Full Circle Future says stronger landfill standards could slash methane pollution 46% by 2050.

The group says landfill emissions equal more than 1 million gas-powered cars, yet fewer than one-third of landfills reported methane data to the EPA in 2023. Aerial surveys have detected major methane plumes across the state, signaling widespread underreporting.

Local advocates urged the New York Department of Environmental Conservation to act, citing health risks for communities near landfills. They called for better monitoring, tighter controls, and a shift away from mega-landfills.
