Lawmakers open session with budget battle ahead

New York’s 2026 legislative session kicked off with both parties zeroing in on the next state budget, according to WBNG. Republicans like Sen. Joseph Griffo want to rein in spending and push tax relief and crime-fighting policies.

Democrats, including Sen. Lea Webb, say the focus must also include fixing affordability and replacing lost federal funding for child care and health care. Governor Hochul has pledged to expand universal child care — a longtime goal of Webb’s.

Lawmakers are expected to roll out more detailed plans after the governor’s State of the State address next week.
