A toast, a fresh mayor, and big priorities kicked off the new year in Canandaigua, according to the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle. Newly sworn-in Mayor Thomas Lyon promised action from day one after unseating the city’s lone Republican mayor in November.
Lyon and the nine-member City Council say 2026 will focus on downtown development, affordable housing, environmental protection, and long-standing flooding concerns tied to Sucker Brook and Canandaigua Lake. Funding tops the challenge list, with the city operating under a maintenance budget and seeking new revenue sources to maintain services.
The council also welcomed newcomer John “J.T.” Squires, who plans to push for more affordable housing. Lyon, a senior county planner, says collaboration and community trust will drive decisions in Canandaigua this year.
